Daily Schedule Templates: Finding the “When”
Β
Use your 7-Day Log to find the best time to read. Here are three common templates.
Template 1: The “Two Working Parents” Schedule
-
The Challenge: Evenings are chaotic (dinner, bath, chores).
-
The Strategy: “Anchor” reading to a calm, non-negotiable moment.
-
Sample Schedule:
-
6:30 PM: Dinner
-
7:00 PM: Bath
-
7:30 PM: Reading Time (10 mins). This becomes the official start of the wind-down routine. It happens before pajamas, so they aren’t too sleepy.
-
7:45 PM: Pajamas, brush teeth.
-
8:00 PM: Lights out.
-
Template 2: The “Flexible / Stay-at-Home” Schedule
-
The Challenge: The day is open, making it easy to forget.
-
The Strategy: Use “transition” moments and capitalize on energy levels.
-
Sample Schedule:
-
12:00 PM: Lunch
-
12:30 PM: Outdoor Play
-
1:15 PM: Reading Time (10 mins). Use it as a cool-down from outside, paired with water or a small snack. This is often a peak focus time (as seen in our sample log).
-
1:30 PM: Quiet Time / Nap.
-
Template 3: The “Multiple Kids / Hectic” Schedule
-
The Challenge: Constant interruptions and different reading levels.
-
The Strategy: “Parallel Play” or “Staggered Time.”
-
Sample Schedule:
-
4:00 PM: D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Time. Set a 10-minute timer. Everyone (including you!) grabs a book and reads in the same room. The older child reads independently while you read aloud to the younger child.
-
Alternatively…
-
7:30 PM: Youngest child’s bedtime. You read to them.
-
8:00 PM: Reading Time (10 mins) with the older child. This one-on-one time becomes special.
