💛 Lesson 1.3 – Modeling Joyful Reading
🌟 Children learn more from what we do than what we say.
When your child sees you delight in books, they internalize that joy. Practice small, daily ways to model curiosity, flexibility, and excitement about stories—wherever and whenever reading happens.

Children learn far more from what we do than from what we say. When they witness our genuine delight in books, a powerful form of permission is granted: “Reading is fun, safe, and worth my attention.” In this lesson we’ll explore simple, intentional ways to model the attitudes, behaviors, and body language that nurture a lifelong love of stories.
Key Points:
- Radiate Authentic Enthusiasm: Let your facial expressions, tone, and posture broadcast how much you enjoy reading—even if you’re revisiting the same book for the hundredth time. Genuine joy is contagious!
- Narrate Your Reader’s Mind: Occasionally think aloud (“I wonder what will happen next…” or “That reminds me of…”) to show kids the invisible process of curiosity, prediction, and connection making.
- Show Versatility in Reading Situations: Demonstrate that books fit everywhere—on the couch, at the park, or waiting in line. This signals that reading is a flexible, comforting companion, not a rigid chore.
- Share Your Personal Reading Life: Talk about your own favorites, celebrate finishing a novel, or set mini-goals beside your child. Knowing adults value reading for pleasure (not just “for work”) cements its importance.
Remember, modeling doesn’t require perfection or grand gestures; it lives in small daily actions—curling up with a magazine, laughing at a funny sentence, or proudly displaying your library haul. Each moment plants a seed of joyful literacy that will bloom over time.
