Activity 2: Co-Create Your Tracker
Purpose: Give your child ownership of the tracking system
Time Required: 15-20 minutes
What You’ll Need:
- Progress Tracker PDF (printed)
- 2-3 alternative tracking options (sticker chart, notebook, etc.)
- Stickers, markers, or decorating supplies
Instructions:
Step 1: Show Options (5 minutes)
Show your child 3 different tracking methods:
- The Progress Tracker PDF
- A sticker chart
- A reading journal
- A photo system
- Or something they invent
Say: “I want to start celebrating all the awesome reading things you do. Which of these ways would make you feel proud of your reading?”
Step 2: Let Them Choose
Honor their choice, even if it’s not your preference. Ownership matters more than your “perfect” system.
If they resist all options, try: “Would you rather I just notice and tell you at the end of the week? No chart needed?”
Step 3: Personalize It (10 minutes)
Let your child customize their tracker:
- Pick sticker types at the store
- Choose colors for different behaviors
- Decorate the tracker with drawings
- Add their own “proud moment” category
- Pick where to display it (or keep it private)
Step 4: Set Expectations Together
Ask:
- “When should we fill this out? Right after reading, or at bedtime?”
- “Do you want to add the stickers yourself, or should I?”
- “Should we share this with anyone (Dad, Grandma), or keep it just between us?”
Debrief:
- “How do you feel about trying this for one week?”
- “What if it doesn’t feel good—can we stop or change it?”
- Reassure: “This is to celebrate you, not pressure you. If it ever feels bad, tell me and we’ll change it.”
Why This Matters: Children who help create the system are 3x more likely to stay engaged with it. Co-creation = co-ownership.
